A quote you try to live by.
Welcome to the interwebs where everything has been turned into an inspirational meme. Don’t feel obligated to get the quote correct or be accurate citing the source. If you throw in a picture of some pastoral scene, no one will notice your errors. You too can be a social media sensation.
Sorry. Sometimes the platitudes get on my nerves. Truthfully, I can think of many motivational quotes that appeal to me. However, I can say that there’s one that has been how I’ve (inadvertently) lived most of my adult life:
“Go back?” he thought. “No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!” So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
I’ve been thrown some pretty herculean roadblocks in my life. I’ve powered through financial hardship, loved ones with serious health concerns, legal issues, death, and a controlling, abusive, unfaithful, marriage that ended in a painful divorce. I struggle with trust, self worth, confidence, vulnerability, in perpetuum.
Still I keep on, keeping on. It’s the only thing to do. There have been times that the prospect of moving forward has been positively terrifying, making my heart all a pitter and a patter. There have been moments where I’ve had to force myself to dig deep to find the strength to take just one more step. But I do it, because it’s innately part of my nature to survive, even thrive, no matter what.
It’s the only thing to do!
